Last Tuesday we dropped Mike off at the airport for 6 months.
6 months.
It's weird to do. No matter how tightly you hug it doesn't feel like it's gonna last for 6 months. Even though we'd been telling the kids and talking about it for weeks they didn't really get it either. When we pulled up to the curb at the airport to drop him off we had this conversation with Andrew
A: Where are we?
Me: The airport to drop Daddy off.
A: Why?
Me: Cause' he's going to Italy today, remember?
A: Oh, I don't want him to go. I want to be a family.
Me: Well, we're still a family.
A: I want Daddy to be IN our family
Me: He'll still be in our family- just in Italy. He'll be back after your birthday when you turn 4.
Later as we drove away....
A: Is my birthday next week, Mom?
Me: No, first we have Halloween, Emma's birthday, Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Years, Valentine's Day and THEN your birthday.
A: That's a long time.
Me: (only in my head) yes it is!
But, like they always do they bounced right back like nothing had happened when we walked in the door. They went about their kid business of mess making and playing and fighting. Neither of them took the visible sigh I did when we walked in or seemed affected by Mike's flip flops still on the floor or his milk in the fridge.
They're moving ahead. They don't sleep as well and both get up and come in my room 4 times a night- which is now making for a tired Mama, but they'll adjust. Andrew has taken his token 3 steps backwards in the world of growing up and wets his pants- which makes me want to ship him off to a zoo where he can live in a monkey cage and pee and poo ad lib. But, he'll adjust.
