School Days

We only "do school" four days a week around here- and during the summer we've had a VERY lightened work load (only phonics/reading for Andrew and reading, writing and arithmetic for Emma) so this week starts our capture of all the other subjects- social studies, science, geography.  I'm already tired.

AND- because you really only have these days once Here's a little bio about these kids at the beginning of our school year.

Our big girl is (technically) in first grade!  Our list of challenges is long (and boring really) but our list of joys is even longer.  I think this year is going to be really great for her!  At our co-op she is taking art, Spanish and American Girl book club.  She is SO excited!  We already have a trip planned to Colonial Williamsburg in September and we are going to be reading all of the American Girl Felicity books and doing a unit on Colonial America starting this week!  It's so much fun.  I love how she LOVES to do work herself and really loves to learn about things.  She doesn't love math but she gets all of it pretty quickly.  She still adds and subtracts with her fingers and doesn't always trust that she does in fact know an answer.  (it's like looking in a mirror sometimes!)  She HATES making mistakes and we work daily on not overacting when she does make on (again with the mirror).  She is unlike any other little girl I know and I'm so glad she's ours!

Can't believe this guy is old enough to be in kindergarten!
Andrew is just so pleased with himself learning how to read!  He still is surprised when a book ends and he realizes HE read all the words!  He LOVES finishing a work page and being able to lift it in the air and say "done!"  Andrew is ready to get his work done so he can move onto other important things in life like coloring, playing with legos and playing Mario (the golden egg in our house for sure!)  He would play video games all day if we let him.  He still has an unreal amount of energy and invents new games that involve climbing up door frames and jumping onto our love sac.  He is a ball of fun and he really makes school time fun!
